South-west bedroom bestows a ceaseless relationship between couples, worthy children, healthy life, prosperous wealth ! a romantic voyage of life too 😉 I heard this many a time and arguments of this sort. This in particular is not a bad prophecy but these statements in general extend and the prolongations are ‘not having so which leads to horrible consequences’. On first place saying so is horrible. You got the point, yes I am speaking about Vasstu (Indian geomancy), do not get into conclusions and do not brand me as an atheist or a radical before reading to the end.

I do not want to take things as granted (if not all, atleast in many cases), so on a random day I was thinking about this, and I also heard some one saying it might be due to wind comes from south. Is it so the reason ? If so wind blows from south is not exactly accurate and I felt ‘it is quite interesting; let me draw some time to think of it’. Prima facie we need to understand why do winds blow ? Earth is rotating from west to east, and if the air is standstill it should appear as blowing from east to west but it is not. The atmosphere of the earth also rotates along with the earth due to its gravity (infact, the presence  of atmosphere itself is due to gravity). In that case, air should not move at all like all of us but this is not the case either. Earth does not receive same amount of sunlight on the portion of its surface which faces the sun due to its tilt in the axis with pole star. The seasons on the earth are due to this tilt, the summer days are long and the winter days are short. If there is no tilt, it receives same amount of sunlight during the day all through the year at all the places and there would not be any change in temperature, no seasons and there would not be any life too. Due to this tilt, the equator always receive maximum sunlight and temperatures are high and almost the same through out the year and the temperatures reduce gradually above and below the equator. Due to this temperature gradient, the warm air at the equator move towards north or south and it is being replaced by the relatively cool air from the north or south of the equator. So the wind blows from north to south and south to north, no not exactly. Earth rotates with a speed of 1600 km/hr, as the earth is not a cylindrical shape so its speed is not same all through the surface. Due to its spherical shape, the speed on the equatorial line is maximum (1600 km/hr) and reduces when you move either towards north or south and it is zero at both the poles. So the air at the equator when moves towards north due to its relatively higher velocity compared to the land (the land which is receiving this air moves relatively slow) appear at that place as coming from southwest and the cool air which moves towards equator appear at the equator as coming from northeast. In the same way air which moves towards south appear at that place as coming from northwest and the air from south towards equator appear at the equator as coming from southeast. So in the northern hemisphere it circulates in clock wise direction and in southern hemisphere it circulates in anti-clockwise direction. India is located in the northern hemisphere (above the equator), so the winds appear to come from southwest. So this should be the reason for southwestern bedrooms.

If one thinks a little, the other things which are being said in the Vasstu can be understood. So in olden days Vasstu was based on the circumstantial reason and intelligence but later with time all the superstitions surrounded as the outcome of opportunism and ignorance, also many irrational rules being added. An idol Vastu-purush had been made, violation of these in the constructions would suffice adverse effects. People are bluntly and ignorantly being exploited. If anyone opposes or questions, he has been called as an atheist, even a radical too but their theism is stuck at these dogmas rather realising higher and higher truths in the path of faith. Also I do not have a complete faith in the attempts of aggressive rationalists who expose superstitions. They have a contempt for both faith and a person of faith. How can a believer listen to you when in first place his belief is being criticised so harshly ? There should be a dialogue, he should be questioned why does he believe ? He should be explained about the advent of these things in olden times and later how do things get degenerated; mere confronting does not reap. If you could not get hold of his ear on first place how can you get hold of his mind ? As Rabindranath Tagore says “Not hammer strokes, but dance of the water sings the pebbles into perfection.”
